  • “Great Food/Fantastic Views”

always visit the Britannia Inn when in the Lakes, for the views, the beers & the food. We had the Cumberland sausage on a roll with onion relish, it was a very generous serving & it was delicious. Service was good & we didn't wait long for our food. (Be aware though, in the height of summer, the Britannia gets very busy, so you may have to wait a little bit for your food- but it'll be worth the wait!) We then walked off our lunch by taking the scenic half hour stroll back to Skelwith Bridge & had dessert in Chesters by the River :)

  • A comfortable inn aimed squarely at walkers and visitors, situated in a lovely part of the lakes.

Everything was fine but a special mention for the helpful and friendly staff and the unexpectedly good plumbing and bathroom (room 5) in this historic building. Thank you

  • Everything recommends this place! The friendly welcome from the barman as we came in and the warm open fire in the bar.

A reasonably wide choice late lunch menu (2.00pm till 5.00pm) from which we chose ham sandwiches and fruit scones. The scones were really 'fruit' scones and the ham sandwiches comprised excellent bread (this said by someone who been home baking and not bought a supermarket loaf in over six years) with thick slices of ham in the middle. The beer that washed it down was excellent and well kept as we could see from the change over of a barrel while we were there.

  • I have wanted to stay here since discovering its marvelous food by accident while hiking in the area a few years ago and our experience certainly did not disappoint. Any expectations were easily exceeded and the sudden Indian summer made this weekend perfect.

Our twin room was immaculate and also a reasonable size, with an excellent en suite shower room. Everything was immaculate and we were cosily warm as well. The real superlatives have to be reserved for the warm welcome and the absolutely amazing food, highlights being apricot stuffed partridge and rib eye steak with black peppercorn sauce, alongside the lightest sticky toffee pudding going! (And yes we did eat too much). Nice wine selection also and a particularly delicious Pinot Noir. There are plenty of walks straight from the door, including the one I did around Elterwater Tarn and the area is just far enough off the tourist track to make it delightfully quiet as well as picturesque. HIghly recommended - will definitely be back.

  • Back home after a fantastic week in the Lakes. Went to Britannia Inn every day (as usual) and as always all the staff were great, the food was excellent and the Beer was fab

Please don't change a thing. We stay in Chapel Stile but walk to the best pub in the Lakes cannot wait to be back next year, just wish we could walk to the Britannia from Dorset. Thank you very much for helping to make our holiday great again.

  • One of our top ten favourite places! Right in the middle of the Lake District the Brit is the perfect venue to unwind and relax after a day on the fells or out exploring the stunning English Lake District. We go as often as we can.

  • Please don't go. The less people know about it the better, they've only got 9 rooms :) Rule Britannia!!

  • The grilled sea bass was the best I've had for a long time, and the fact it was served on a bed of asparagus made it that touch more perfect, my two favourites on one plate...

We have stayed here in the past, and can vouch for the excellent service, both in the restaurant and when staying B&B.

  • We spent three nights eating and drinking at The Britannia. They have a great selection of local ales, the Coniston Bluebird being particularly fine. This pub has not been gentrified, but concentrates it's efforts on delivering quality food, drink and service...

Food served in the bar had a good local flavour- it's so nice to see Lakeland lamb featuring. The staff, without exception, were friendly, helpful and seemed to enjoy their work. This created a super atmosphere.

  • Absolutely Fantastic -- My family and I (3 generations - grandparents, parents and children from Devon) have been eating at the Britannia for many years whilst holidaying at Langdale and we have never been disappointed...

For the first time this year we had Christmas lunch here and it was superb. All the staff at the Britannia are very friendly and go out of their way to make you welcome and the whole place has a warm atmosphere. A huge thank you to Andy, Anna and the whole team for wonderful Christmas and can't wait until September when we return.

  • Really enjoyed our short break at the Britannia Inn in Elterwater, with our dog. Good food and real ale, at reasonable prices. We were there for the Sunday night quiz, which we enjoyed though sadly didn't win...

The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, the pub area has a nice cosy atmosphere with a lovely open fire.

  • Enjoyed a fabulous break at the Britannia, Couldn't fault the stay, cosy pub, real fires, great food, good choice of real ales and friendly welcoming staff, perfect place to return to after a good walk...

Rooms were lovely, clean, cosy and warm; and hooks were ideal for hanging up all the wet walking gear.

  • Having visited the Lake District regularly over the years I can honestly say The Britannia Inn is one of the best 'country pub' experiences going...

Whether attending for an evening meal or a pint after a long walk The Britannia fits the bill! With a fantastic mid-village location overlooking the village square it's great for dining out under the large canopies and watching the world go by or experiencing the rustic decoration in the pub itself. With a great range of handpull ales on offer, traditional pub foods and many local walks to embark on; The Britannia is without doubt one of my favourite pubs!

  • We just keep on coming back. The Brit has everything we want from a traditional Lakeland Inn. Great food, great beer and great hospitality!
